QTRL Graduate Student Wins Award for Best MSc Thesis

Mark Ahenda doing fieldwork Congratulations to MSc graduate student Mark Ahenda on receiving a distinguished prize from the Geological Association of Canada (GAC).   

Mark is the recipient of the Jack Henderson Prize for Best MSc Thesis of 2018 for his thesis “Protolith affiliation and tectonometamorphic evolution of the Gurla Mandhata core complex, NW Nepal Himalaya” in Structural Geology and Tectonics. He will be presented this award at the upcoming GAC-MAC-IAH meeting in Quebec City on Monday, May 13, 2019.

PhD Student Receives Society of Economic Geologists Foundation, Inc. Grant

Callum Walter doing fieldworkCongratulations to PhD graduate student Callum Walter, BSc’16, on receiving a prestigious Student Research Grant awarded by the Society of Economic Geologists Foundation, Inc (SEGF SRG).

Callum is the recipient of the Hugo Dummett Mineral Discovery Fund Grant. This award is granted to those focused on mineralogy exploration and was presented to Callum based on his research on technological innovation in exploration!

It is with great sadness we share the passing of alumna Dr. Mabel Corlett on Sunday, April 14, 2019.

In 1960 Mabel was the first woman to obtain a BSc in Geology at Queen’s University. She earned her MSc and PhD at the University of Chicago, returning to Queen’s in 1969 to teach Mineralogy. She made great strides as the  department’s first female professor. She resigned in 1986 to start her own business, the Wool Room.

Mabel will be deeply missed by her former students and colleagues.

A celebration of life will be held at the Kingston Yacht Club on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2 – 5 pm.

Dr. Jamieson Awarded Rick Hutson Mentorship Award

Congratulations to Dr. Heather Jamieson, for being named the 2019 Rick Hutson Mentorship Award winner from Women in Mining Canada.  

This award is being presented to Dr. Jamieson in recognition of the role she has played in mentoring, supporting and guiding young women in their studies and in taking their first steps, and then beyond that, in helping them to manoeuvre in the early days of their mining careers...
