Thesis Topic Investigation of the large-scale controls on the morphodynamics of submarine fans through laboratory flume experiments.
Supervisor Dr. Elisabeth Steel

Research Interests

Current Research Interest:

My current research interest revolves around the qualitative and quantitative characterization of morphodynamics and evolution of submarine fans, the largest repository of sediments in the deepwater environment, host some of the world's largest petroleum systems as well as mineral deposits.

This research will further our understanding of deepwater reservoir heterogeneity, aid in carbon sequestration projects, and mitigating risks to the stability of subsea infrastructures, often built on dynamic sea floors.

Subjects of Research Interest:

My professional and academic experiences have shaped my research interests over the years. Based on my passion and knowledge harnessed with hands-on experience, the following are my broader research interest subjects.:

  • Process Sedimentology &  Geomorphology: Morphodynamics of Deepwater vs. Fluvial deposits.
  • Deepwater depositional systems in mini basins and active margins.
  • Application of Sequence Stratigraphy in the hydrology of the mixed siliciclastic system.
  • Paleoclimatic Analysis using diagenetic proxy modeling, stable isotope analysis, biomarker fingerprinting, and other geochemical methods.
  • Reservoir Characterization: Integration of Outcrop, Lab, and Subsurface data.
  • 3D Geomechanical Modelling using Seismic & Well Log Interpretation, Rock Physics, Geomechanics

About Arijit

Arijit recently joined Queen's University in the Ph.D. program under Dr. Elizabeth Steel in Fall'2020 in Queen's Sedimentology Group.

In the last 15 years (2005-20), Arijit has gained professional experience in the petroleum E&P domain, worked for renowned operators, and on behalf of consulting companies( Kuwait Oil Company, Baker Hughes, Reliance Industries Limited) across South/South East Asia, UK and the Norwegian North Sea, Continental Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, serving multiple roles in several techno-economic projects.

This gamut of professional experience has boosted his interest in pursuing dedicated research work in Applied Geoscience. He contributed to a multidisciplinary project that resulted in an innovative workflow accepted as US patent: US010126448B2.

He has worked in multicultural and diverse teams, published and presented in different technical forums, and also volunteered as a member of 2nd EAGE Eastern Africa Petroleum Geoscience Forum(2016) and 2nd & 3rd Springer Arabian Journal of Geosciences Conference(2019, 2020) technical committees.

Arijit completed B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Geological Sciences at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India in 2003. He subsequently obtained an M.Sc. degree in Applied Geology at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India in 2005. His M.Sc. thesis work was focused on mixed siliciclastic facies analysis of Paleogene Kutch Basin, above Deccan flood basalt in Western India. This project helped map out and characterize the 1st Eocene transgressive marginal marine and open marine units of the Kutch basin, integrating diagenetic facies with the passive margin basin's depositional architecture.
