Robert Sutherland Visitors: Dr. Bonita Lawrence and Faith Nolan
March 10, 2016 - Women's Prison and Solidarity: Songs and Teachings
The Other Kingston Project continued its work with prison solidarity after the closing of the Prison for Women in 2000 by hosting events during International Women's Week with guests Dr. Bonita Lawrence and Faith Nolan. The events were sponsored by the Robert Sutherland Visitorship, the Department of Gender Studies, Four Directions Aboriginal Student Centre and Kahswethna Knowledge Initiative.
On Thursday, March 10, 2016, Bonita joined with the Four Directions Women's Singers with drumming and singing. In her talk titled "Honouring the Sisterhood: P4W and Beyond" she gave a history of how Prison for Women treated the prisoners and how the inquiry by Louise Arbour brought to light many human rights violations. Faith Nolan spoke and sang on "Women's Jailhouse Blues still is news". Faith showed her video "Within These Cages" with a choir she worked with in a US prison. Faith founded the choir in the Prison for Women and is still involved in prison choir work and Critical Resistance, a justice group. The Four Directions singers and event attendees joined Faith in a final song to close out this powerful evening.
