Communications Assistant

This position supports department operations by preparing general communications, developing social media content, creating digital display templates, and assisting with the department webpage and newsletter.  Required qualifications are:

  • Advanced computer skills and experience, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), Adobe, Zoom, web-based publishing software, and social media communication platforms
  • Experience creating social media content, graphic elements, and digital templates
  • Demonstrated ability to collate, research, and simplify complex and/or ambiguous information, and communicate this information accurately and effectively to students, staff, and faculty
  • An overarching commitment to making all communications accessible and a familiarity with, or ability to learn how to, create accessible documents
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and interpersonal skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals in a helpful and professional manner
  • Organization and time-management skills with strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision 
  • Knowledge of academic regulations, policies, degree requirements, and support services is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Department of Gender Studies and the fields of Black Studies, Indigenous Studies, and Anti-Racism is required
  • Demonstrated passion, continuous learning, and training in anti-racism and commitment to promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice in the workplace

Hours: Schedule will be developed in consultation with the supervisor
Location: Office space will be provided.  Some work may be done remotely.
Contract term: 75 hours (minimum) from September 1, 2022 – April 30, 2023
Hourly rate: $26/hour + 4% in lieu of vacation

Technology Assistant

This position supplements central ITS and CTL support by offering individualized OnQ and general technical support and troubleshooting to Gender Studies and Black Studies faculty members and course instructors. Required qualifications are:

  • Advanced computer skills and experience, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), Adobe, Zoom, OnQ, and other educational technology tools 
  • Familiarity with advanced functionalities in OnQ including but not limited to rubric construction, grade book development, course layout and navigation
  • Ability to listen to the needs and interests of individual faculty and instructors, think creatively about technical solutions, provide a clear explanation about potential options, and provide support in implementing next steps
  • An overarching commitment to making all communications accessible and a familiarity with, or ability to learn how to, create accessible documents
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to emerging technologies 
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and interpersonal skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals in a helpful and professional manner
  • Organization and time-management skills with strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision
