Reporting to the Department Manager, and receiving work direction from the Director of Black Studies, the Program and Administrative Assistant, Black Studies is responsible for the daily administration and operation of the Black Studies undergraduate program (BLCK Studies). The Program and Administrative Assistant, Black Studies is the first point of contact for faculty, students, university and external community connected to BLCK Studies and serves as program liaison with faculty and staff in more than 25 departments, as well as the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University Registrar’s Office. Working closely with the Department Leadership Team in Gender Studies, the Director of Black Studies and the Black Studies Advisory Board, this position provides administrative support for BLCK Studies program initiatives such as coordinating experiential learning opportunities, student recruitment and engagement events and activities including speaker series, partnerships, and internships, to promote and increase the number of quality applicants to the undergraduate program and graduate programs. As an integral member of the Gender Studies (GNDS) team and advocate for Anti-racism training, the incumbent recommends and participates in implementing changes to the Black Studies Minor following university, faculty, and departmental policies/guidelines, and contributes to anti-oppression strategies in BLCK, GNDS and across all university departments who attend questions of racism, colonialism and Anti-racism in particular.

The Program and Administrative Assistant, Black Studies is also responsible for providing administrative support to the Chair of the Appointments and Renewal, Tenure and Promotion Committees, and Faculty Search Committees, and day to day administrative services in the Gender Studies Department. This includes providing financial administrative support for researchers, information dissemination to all Faculty members, research personnel, reconciliation of procurement card statements and assistance with other research financial duties. The incumbent prepares reports, correspondence, schedules, coordinates meetings, and works closely with the Undergraduate Assistant to prepare communications, develop content and maintain the program’s website and social media accounts.
