This seminar will explore selected topics in British society and culture from the late 18th century to the turn of the 20th century. We will examine the ways in which nineteenth-century Britain experienced rapid social and cultural change and, in particular, we will be considering the categories of race, class and gender to understand the different ways that British identity and culture could be formed, We will also critically examine the role of the British empire in British society “back home” in Britain to connect Britain to global histories of colonial expansion and resistance.
