Registration Information for First Year Students

Dear Students,

Welcome to Queen’s University! Beginning today and tomorrow, students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Science departments will start enrolling in first-year courses. This is an important milestone in your undergraduate career and on behalf of the Department of History, I want to wish you good luck and bon voyage!

If you have decided to study History at Queen’s or if you are thinking of choosing History as your Major, Medial, or Minor plan, you are required to complete 6.0 units of 100-level History courses in your first year. Unlike previous years, this year we are offering five 3.0-unit courses for first-year students. Visit the First Year Courses page to see the course titles, descriptions, and video introductions to the courses. You can choose these courses in any order you want, but we recommend that you choose one course in the fall and another in the winter. This is a recommendation, not a requirement.

While registering for these courses on SOLUS, you will find that under “Days and Times” a time span of 12:00AM—12:00AM is indicated. Again, under “Room” the notation TBA is specified. This might be confusing to you, but all this means is that the class will meet online and there is no set time for live lectures. Your course professors and seminar instructors will hold meetings and office hours, and they will communicate these arrangements at the beginning of the course. These meetings will be scheduled after consulting with you.

If you have any questions, please email me at Meanwhile, I encourage you to read the latest ENEWS published by the Faculty of Arts and Science. It contains important and updated information on the registration process.

Please also see INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS FALL 2020 & WINTER 2021 for updated information for undergraduate students, although much of it is more relevant to the upper-year students.

Once again, I wish you all the best as you embark on this exciting and important journey.

Good wishes,

Amitava Chowdhury
