The Dunin-Deshpande Summer Pitch Competition

Are you a founder in need of early stage seed funding to move your venture to the next level? Apply to pitch in our largest pitch competition of the year. Historically, up to $100,000 in funds has been awarded!

The Dunin-Deshpande Summer Pitch Competition is an opportunity for early stage ventures in Kingston to compete for seed funding and access to the Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre mentors and support. Startups will be pitching to a panel of seasoned entrepreneurs and experienced capital allocators to gain valuable feedback on their business model while competing for awards typically ranging from $5,000-30,000 to support their company. The pool of funding available is approximately $80,000-100,000 and will be awarded entirely at the discretion of the judging panel.

Eligibility

Founders who are interested in applying must be available for the following key dates:

  • August 1st, 2018. Pitch for admission into the Dunin-Deshpande Summer Pitch Competition. Finalists will be invited to pitch in the Final Pitch Competition.
  • August 8th, 2018. Mandatory pitch coaching session for finalists with Anil Dilawri from Save it Like Sully.
  • August 23rd, 2018. Final Pitch Competition at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts.

This competition is open to both for-profit and not-for-profit ventures who have been funded less than $10,000 (grants, pitch prizes, loans, equity). This competition is open to ventures at Queen's University and in the Kingston region.

*Ventures do not have to be affiliated with Queen’s, but must operate in Kingston or the surrounding region.* 

Expectations for Applying

The information in the Business Model Canvas/Social Business Model Canvas has been integrated into the application form. All applicants are expected to review the following resources that outline how to effectively complete the Business Model Canvas/Social Business Model Canvas:

Applicants should also refer to these Additional Resources to get a more in depth understanding of what a competitive business model entails.

Application

The application process will happen in two stages:

1) Complete one of the Application Forms provided in the survey links below by July 23rd, 2018 at 11:59PM. If you have a social enterprise or non-profit, please submit your application via the “Social Business Model Application Form”. All other applicants can submit via the “Business Model Canvas Application Form” link.

 

 

Note: The Business Model Canvas/Social Business Model Canvas has been integrated into the above application. Please fill out each field as it corresponds to your draft of the Business Model Canvas/Social Business Model Canvas. You do NOT need to submit the one-page canvas as a separate file.

2) Pitch on August 1st for admittance into the Final Pitch Competition. Details about pitch time and location will be confirmed following the successful completion of the Application Form. All pitches on August 1st will take place on Queen's University main campus in Kingston.

The Regional Pitch Competition Series is made up of three pitch competitions per year. The next opportunities to pitch in the series will be in Fall 2018 and Winter 2019. Check back here for details about upcoming pitch competitions.
