Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus

Office 365 ProPlus is a full version of Office designed to work Office 365 applications and services. This subscription-based service provides faculty, students and staff with the latest versions of Microsoft Office for use on their PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones at no cost. Office Online apps are included and provide access to online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

What's included?

  • A full, installed Office experience across PCs, Macs, Windows tablets and iPad and Android tablets, and most mobile devices.
  • Installation on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets (Windows, iPad, Android), and five mobile devices with Office Mobile. 
  • Regular updates, as often as monthly, with new features, unlike other versions of Office.
  • Applications that you're familiar with, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint for Windows or Mac, OneNote (features vary), and Access and Publisher (PC only), OneDrive for Business.
  • Applications that seamlessly connect with Office 365 applications and services such as SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, and Microsoft Teams.

Getting Started

Who Can Have It?

  • Office 365 ProPlus is available to all current students, faculty and staff of Queen's University with an active Queen's email account.
  • Alumni and retired faculty and staff are not eligible for this service.

Are There Any Costs?

  • This service is provided at no cost to eligible users.
  • Users are responsible for any personal ISP/cellular data charges arising from downloading Office 365 ProPlus suite of applications.

How Do I Get It?

  • To download and install Office 365 ProPlus, log into the Office 365 Software Portal or select the "Office 365 Software Portal" tile from the Office 365 app launcher.

System Requirements and Supported Devices

  • Office 365 ProPlus is a full version of Office designed to work with Office 365 application and services.  For more information, see System requirements for Office  . Be sure to note that your computer needs to be running at least Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to install Office 365 ProPlus. For the best experience, the latest version of any operating system is recommended.
  • Office 365 ProPlus is available in a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. Microsoft recommends that users deploy the 32-bit version, even on computers using 64-bit operating systems. If you think you need the 64-bit version, carefully review Choose between the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office.
  • Microsoft does not recommend nor support the installation of mixed versions of Office on a Windows based computer.  To verify your version, open an Office Application, Click on File > Account.  If you have an "Updates Section", your version was installed from Office 365.  If you do not have an "Updates Section",you will need to remove the current version before installing Office 365 ProPlus from the Office 365 software portal.

Licensing Details

  • Office 365 ProPlus is a full version of Office. The programs have the same features and functionality as other versions of Office.

  • Users can install Office 365 ProPlus on up to five different computers with a single Office 365 license. For a sixth installation, one of the previous five must be deactivated.

  • Office 365 ProPlus is not a web-based version of Office. It runs locally on the user's computer. Users don't need to be connected to the Internet all the time to use it.

  • Even though users don't need to be connected to the Internet all the time to use Office 365 ProPlus, users must connect to the Internet at least once every 30 days, on each machine that Office 365 ProPlus is installed on. This is so that the status of their Office 365 subscriptions can be checked. If users don't connect within 30 days, Office 365 ProPlus goes into reduced functionality mode. After users connect to the Internet and their subscription status is verified, all the features of Office 365 ProPlus are available again.

Note: As of February 12, 2019, OneNote 2016 is no longer included by default when installing Office 365 on Windows 10 from the Office 365 software portal.  On computers running Windows 10, the new OneNote for Windows 10 app is the recommended version of OneNote. This version is pre-installed on most editions of Windows 10 and can be found by clicking OneNote on the Windows Start menu, but OneNote for Windows 10 is also available in the Microsoft Store. If you still require OneNote 2016, please review Microsoft's help article on installing OneNote 2016.
