FAQs for Windows File Service

ITS has gathered a listing of frequently asked questions. If you have a question that is not found on the list, please fill out the Online Support Form or call us at 613 533 6666.

Q. I'm an IT Admin Rep and I got an automated alert message about quota for my department.  Is it spam? What should I do?

As explained at the Restricted Resources page, IT Admin Reps will be sent a notification when disk usage on the department's shared file space is approaching the limit. They can then can ask their users to remove files they no longer need, or they can contact the ITSC to request additional storage, for a fee (see Service Fees).

Q. I received an alert message that says my department's shared drive has reached a percentage of the soft limit.  What's a soft limit?

When the amount of file space used by the department reaches the soft limit (95% of the hard limit) an alert is sent, but the department can continue to add and update files.  When the hard limit is reached, no new files can be created and existing files cannot be moved or edited.

Q. How much file space do I get?

The default quota for a department is the product of the base amount per Staff or Faculty (see Service Fees) multiplied by the number of full-time staff in the department.  The total space used is monitored by the quota software.
