Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise

Office 365 ProPlus is now Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise.

Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise (formerly Office 365 ProPlus) is a full version of Office designed to work Microsoft 365 applications and services. This subscription-based service provides faculty, students and staff with the latest versions of Microsoft Office for use on their PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones at no cost. Office for the web apps are included and provide access to web versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

What's included?

  • A full, installed Office experience across PCs, Macs, Windows tablets and iPad and Android tablets, and most mobile devices.
  • Installation on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets devices (Windows, iPad, Android), and five mobile devices with Office Mobile per user -- a total of fifteen devices. 
  • Always up-to-date versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint for Windows or Mac, OneNote (features vary), Teams, OneDrive for Business, and Access and Publisher (PC only).
  • Applications that seamlessly connect with Microsoft 365 applications and services such as SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, and Microsoft Teams.

Getting Started

Who Can Have It?

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise is available to all current students, faculty and staff of Queen's University with an active Queen's NetID@queensu.ca email account.
  • Retired faculty and staff are eligible for this service.
  • Alumni are not eligible for this service.

Are There Any Costs?

  • This service is provided at no cost to eligible users.
  • Users are responsible for any personal ISP/cellular data charges arising from downloading the Office suite of applications.

System Requirements and Supported Devices

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise provides a full version of Office designed to work with Microsoft 365 application and services.  For more information, see System requirements for Microsoft 365 and Office . Be sure to note that your computer needs to be running at least Windows 7 Service Pack 1 to install Office. For the best experience, the latest version of any operating system is recommended.
  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise is available in a 32-bit and a 64-bit version. Microsoft recommends that users deploy the 32-bit version, even on computers using 64-bit operating systems. If you think you need the 64-bit version, carefully review Choose between the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office.
  • Microsoft does not recommend nor support the installation of mixed versions of Office on a Windows based computer.  To verify your version, open an Office Application, Click on File > Office Account.  If you have an "Office Updates" section, your version was installed from the Office Portal.  If you do not have an "Office Updates" section,you will need to remove the current version before installing Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise from the Office Portal.

Licensing Details

  • Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise provides a full version of Office.
  • Users can install Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise on up to five different computers with a single Office 365 license. For a sixth installation, one of the previous five must be deactivated.
  • Even though users don't need to be connected to the Internet all the time to use Office, users must connect to the Internet at least once every 30 days, on each machine that Office is installed on. This is so that the status of their Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise subscription can be checked. If users don't connect within 30 days, Office will go into reduced functionality mode. After users connect to the Internet and their subscription status is verified, all the features of Office are available again.

OneNote 2016 and Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise

  • Starting in March 2020, OneNote 2016 will continue to be installed with Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise on Windows 10 from the Office Portal.  This follows Microsoft's previous announcement that mainstream support for OneNote 2016 would end in October 2020, which is no longer the case (refer to Frequently Asked Questions about OneNote). On computers running Windows 10, the new OneNote for Windows 10 app is the recommended version of OneNote. This version is pre-installed on most editions of Windows 10 and can be found by clicking OneNote on the Windows Start menu, but OneNote for Windows 10 is also available in the Microsoft Store. If you require OneNote 2016, please review Microsoft's help article on installing OneNote 2016.
