Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching

Queen’s University is a member of the Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program. The focus of the program is to provide departments, faculty and students with the tools necessary to specifically expand their study of software development and testing. This program allows eligible users access to various Microsoft software products at no cost. 

Products such as Access, Project, SQL Server, Visio, Visual Studio, Windows, Windows Servers and many more are available.

Getting Started

Who Can Have It?

The Azure Dev Tools for Teaching subscription is available to the following "authorized users":

  • Students: an individual person who is actively enrolled part or full-time in and attending courses at an Educational Institution that lead to academic credit, certification or a degree.
  • Staff: an individual providing IT or administrative support directly associated with managing the Subscription. This includes Support Staff who teach or instruct students, conduct non-commercial research, or both. Also, any support staff who are responsible for maintaining departmental labs can install Azure Dev Tools for Teaching software onto their personal computers but only for evaluation purposes.
  • Faculty: an individual who is employed to teach courses to Students, assist with courses, labs or programs for Students, or conduct non-commercial research.

  • Azure Dev Tools for Teaching is available at no cost

How Do I Get It?

Software products can be downloaded from Azure Dev Tools for Teaching in the Education Hub Software section.  Refer to How to download software for instructions.


  • Some products require the use of a "Product Activation Key"
    • Only one key will be issued per product
    • The key will be obtained when downloading the product

Note: Microsoft Office is NOT available from Azure Dev Tools for Teaching. Microsoft Office is available for download. For more information, visit the Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise software page.

What if I Leave Queen's?

  • You will lose access to Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching when you leave the university.

Additional Information

  • It is your responsibility to make a backup of install files and keys, you may not be able to retrieve them through the site in future, even while you are still an active member of the program.
  • Software is provided on an as-is basis.
  • IT Services makes no warranty or assurances that the software will work in the manner the student expects.
  • Software is installed at the student's own risk.
  • If a student is uncomfortable installing software on his/her personal computer, then they should not participate in the program.
  • Due to the volume of students in the program, IT Services are unable to provide software support for any issues encountered.
