Installing SCEP for Windows

This tutorial gives step-by-step instructions for installing SCEP on Windows. SCEP can be installed on Windows 7 and Windows 8.  Windows 10 does not require SCEP as it comes with Windows Defender.

Note: As part of the installation process, the SCEP for Windows installer will uninstall the following antivirus programs:

  • Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition version 10
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection version 11
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition version 12
  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise version 8
  • Trend Micro OfficeScan
  • Microsoft Forefront Codename Stirling Beta 2
  • Microsoft Forefront Codename Stirling Beta 3
  • Microsoft Forefront Client Security v1
  • Microsoft Security Essentials v1
  • Microsoft Security Essentials 2010
  • Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010
  • Microsoft Security Center Online v1

Please note:  Depending upon the configuration of your operating system and chosen web browser, you may notice some differences with the steps below. These instructions are meant to be used as a general guide, and the process should be similar for most situations.

  1. To download SCEP, go to MyQueen'sU and log in using your NetID and password.
  2. Open the Software Centre  
    • Scroll down to the Antivirus Software (SCEP) section
    • Click SCEP for Windows

  3. The What do you want to do with SCEP Install (Windows).zip? screen will open
    • Click Open

  4. The file will be downloaded to your personal computer
    • Click the System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection file

  5. The Compressed (zipped) folders screen will open
    • Some of the files are in a compressed format and need to be extracted
    • Click Extract all button

  6. The Select a Destination and Extract Files screen will open
    • You can accept the default location or
    • Browse to a different location
    • Check the box beside Show extracted files when complete
    • Click the Extract button

  7. The location of the extracted files will be displayed
    • To begin the installation, click System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection

  8. The Security Warning screen will be displayed
    • Click Run

  9. The SCEP is currently being installed on your workstation... screen will be displayed
    • During the installation information screens will be displayed indicating the progress of the installation.

  10. During the installation process several alerts may appear. 
    • They indicate that Windows is monitoring your security settings
    • They are normal during the installation process
    • Do nothing

  11. System Center Endpoint Protection Installation screen will be displayed 
    • If you are prompted to allow the installation, say yes
    • SCEP has been successfully installed.  
    • Click the OK button

  12. System Center Endpoint Protection can be opened from either the Start menu or from the System tray 
    • From the Start Menu, select System Center Endpoint Protection
    • Or from the System tray, right mouse click on the SCEP icon (shown below)

  13. Ensure that System Center Endpoint Protection will perform a full scan at least once a week and a quick scan 
    • Select the Settings tab
    • From the Scan type: drop down menu, select Full scan
    • From the When: drop down menu, select what day to run the full scan on
    • From the Around: drop down menu, select a time for the full scan to run
    • Check the box beside Daily quick scan time around: 
    • Select a time for the quick scan to run.
