About

Zachary Smith is a 2019-2020 Indigenous Pre-Doctoral Fellow at Queen’s University and PhD Candidate in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. Broadly interested in twentieth century Indigenous history, my current project explores Indigenous histories of post-war migration and urbanization. Focused on Toronto between 1945 and 1969, the project seeks to understand the structural conditions that compelled individuals and family groups to migrate to urban areas; the factors that combined to make migration both possible and desirable; and the role of state and non-state actors in both encouraging and regulating Indigenous migration.
