Meghan Greavette is a third year student majoring in Classical Studies and minoring in Indigenous Studies, as well as a student in Concurrent Education. She is the recipient of the Queen's University Excellence Scholarship and ton the Dean's Honour List. Meghan'sinterest for Indigenous issues started early:
"I decided to pursue a degree in Indigenous Studies because I took an Indigenous Studies course in high school and that course spiked my interest to the material. I think it is important to learn about people of indigenous heritage due to the fact that they represent a large amount of the population of Canada.
The Indigenous Studies courses that I have taken had a fair level of difficultly. Queen’s offers a variety of fascinating courses relating to Indigenous Studies. My favorite course I have taken is a language course called Inuktitut. This course involved a lot of interacting with peers to practice and present dialogue. This was a fun course and allowed me to meet more people in my program as well. My major is Classics and due to this I take general history courses. These history courses overlap with some material that is taught in Indigenous Studies courses. My major and minor complement each other as they both can clarify information that is not covered.
I am currently apart of the Concurrent Education program at Queen’s so when I graduate I will have a bachelor of arts as well as a bachelor of education. When I graduate I plan to teach on a reserve in Canada for a few years and then teach an Indigenous Studies course in a high school.
I find that the professors in my program are very passionate about the material they teach. The passion they portray makes the classes more enjoyable. The classes are typically smaller so it is easier to interact with peers as well as the professors. They are very interested in your feedback about lectures and willing to provide clarification or feedback. The professors are very friendly and genuinely want to hear what you have to say.
I have been able to get involved through volunteering with the Queen’s open house as well as partaking in Queen’s Dance Club classes. In the community, I assist with coaching the KVCI senior girls’ soccer team. Queen’s offers many opportunities to get involved through conferences, trips, clubs and other activities."
