DSC Co-Presidents 2021

Halle Zachary and Natalie Lane are our 2021-22 LLCU Departmental Student Council Co-Presidents. Read through their introductions and then about their plans for this academic year:

Natalie:
Natalie LaneMy name is Natalie Lane, I am a second-year Life Science Major and Linguistics Minor at Queen’s! I particularly enjoy Life Sciences as it is very tangible, as well as enables me with knowledge to guide conversation about living things, which is pretty cool. As far as linguistics, I’ve always had a fascination for language and culture. I’ve studied a few languages growing up as well as spent a lot of my childhood travelling the globe, so I thought I would dive deeper into the study of languages and am enjoying it thus far!

As well as being part of the DSC this year, I am also involved with the Queen’s University International Centre with the English Conversation Program. I have the role of a student facilitator and meet weekly with international students who aim to feel more comfortable with North American culture and English conversation.

On a personal note, I am an avid adventure-seeker. Some of my favourite hobbies include scuba diving, ski racing, heli-skiing, kickboxing, and skydiving. Also, ask me about some travelling stories, I’d love to share them! Aside from the craziness, I am a total foodie and absolutely love experiencing new foods and tastes, especially if it involves the fusion of two cultures.

Halle:
Hi everyone, my name is Halle Zachary and I am a fourth year Concurrent Education student majoring in LLCU! Throughout the past four years I have enjoyed manyHalle Zachary different LLCU courses and have taken many different languages. It has been an amazing program for me to connect with professors, apply the skills I have learned in a practical setting with LLCU 303 and continue to work on my French while enjoying so many more languages and learning about many different cultures and groups of people. As I am studying to be a future educator in the Primary/Junior division this program has exceeded my expectations when it comes to the range of courses available and I am so thankful for the knowledge I am gaining for myself and my future students.

I am very excited to bring my passion for LLCU to other students this year and help them when it comes to courses and making connections with Profs and Administration! I have been a part of a few different clubs and committees at Queens that have enhanced my university experience - Autism Speaks Canada Queen's U and I am currently in the process of becoming a Queen’s Student Constable!

When it comes to who I am as an individual, I was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where hiking, swimming and camping on Lake Superior in the summer; and playing hockey with my family, ice skating on the trails and visiting outdoor markets are some of my favorite activities! I enjoy travelling, trying new types of food and learning about different cultures with my family and friends. I have a passion for working with children and have been a Summer Camp Director on Lake Huron for the past three summers and a respite support worker in my free time! I am very excited to work with the Department, getting to know professors and engaging with students.

DSC Plans For The 2021-2022 Academic Year:

This year, our main goal is to facilitate a community in the LLCU Department between Professors and students. We have many academic and social events planned that will contribute to building a family atmosphere where students can ask questions, learn more about the program and connect with Professors and peers! We would like to start a Peer Mentorship Program where upper year students will be paired with First and Second year students or students who have taken similar courses; they can build a connection and friendship while participating in events and study sessions together!

We encourage all Professors to speak to their students about the DSC, let them know to follow the Facebook or Instagram pages and look out for emails from us to outline the events we are planning. If any Professors are able to  participate in events or drop by and say Hello so that the students can meet you and build a connection with you in the LLCU Department it would be greatly appreciated! We are looking forward to an amazing year where we can start planning in-person events and be together again!
