A number of Federal and Provincial funding agencies actively support student engagement with industry.  This could be at either the undergraduate or graduate student level.  

Listed below are agencies and programs industry should be aware of to help with your talent development needs.

Studentship programs

Mitacs Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. Working with 60 universities, thousands of companies, and both federal and provincial governments, we build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada.

NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience Program (CREATE)

Supports the training of teams of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs that:

• encourage collaborative and integrative approaches, and address significant scientific challenges associated with Canada’s research priorities
• and facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce.

NSERC Experience Awards(Previously Industrial Undergraduate Student Research Awards) The Experience Awards offer companies access to talented natural sciences and engineering undergraduate students for a work term. This cost-shared program allows students to address company-specific R&D challenges while gaining valuable industrial experience. Experience Awards also let companies identify potential future full-time employees.
NRCan Science and Technology Internship Program The Science and Technology Internship Program (STIP) provides an opportunity to recent graduates in science or engineering to gain relevant and meaningful work experiences within their field of studies.
NRC-IRAP Youth Employment Program The NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) delivers its Youth Employment Program under Youth Employment Strategy and provides small and medium-sized enterprises with financial assistance to hire highly skilled post-secondary graduates. 
OCE TalentEdge Internship Program and TalentEdge Fellowship Program TalentEdge provides Ontario students and recent graduates with real-world industry experience. Through the program, interns and postdoctoral fellows can apply their expertise, leading-edge knowledge and tools to solving industry problems.
