Students need to be able to transfer learning from academic courses and apply it to solve problems outside of the classroom. We have noted that a number of students are not making these links, particularly between foundational math courses and physics courses. This has negative consequences for the students’ comprehension and success in many very important courses in their program of study. At a Physics Pedagogy Interest Group session, an idea was proposed to help students overcome this gap that has generated considerable interest among faculty. The successful SWEP student will play the central role in bringing this idea to fruition and serving their fellow students. The SWEP student will collect/develop online math diagnostics and learning modules that students will be able to follow to help themselves diagnose and overcome their specific math skills gap. The SWEP student will be guided by specific faculty and learning experts in the department.
