SWEP Position: Teaching and Learning Assistant

Dates: May 2019 to August 2019
Deadline:  Friday February 8th, 2019

The Teaching and Learning Assistant will work as part of a team to develop new ways to improve student learning in our second-year undergraduate lab course.
The main duties are to:

- Design new experiments and exercises that target particular learning outcomes
- Research best practices at other universities and find suitable activities to implement at Queen's
- Troubleshoot and test experiments to improve learning
- Develop high quality, low-cost apparatus with the potential for commercialization
- Write instructions and activities that elicit engagement from students

We have developed a very high-quality, but inexpensive, coupled-oscillator and we are exploring the possibility of commercializing this experimental setup or releasing it as open-source hardware.  The assistant will be part of this effort. Qualifications: We are looking for students who are interested in experimental science, who want to help other students learn, and who can communicate well (both in writing and orally) with colleagues as they will work in a team.  Technical expertise in programming (Python, Jupyter Notebook, interfacing with microcomputers such as the Raspberry Pi and Arduino), design (CAD) and practical electronics (building and testing circuits) would be advantageous. An interest or experience with marketing, business or a startup company, at this stage in the project, would also be useful because, as mentioned above, we have apparatus that is approaching the point that it could be commercialized.
