Dr. Stéfanie von Hlatky, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies, has received the Rhodes Inspirational Educator Award. Dr. von Hlatky was nominated by former Political Studies student and current Rhodes Scholar, Claire Gummo, Artsci’18.

“I had the great privilege of learning from Dr. Stéfanie von Hlatky. I am inspired by the way Dr. von Hlatky’s confidence and intelligence never fails to command the respect and admiration of her colleagues," said Claire in her nomination letter. "She has acted as a crucial role model for me, shaping my approach to professional and academic endeavours. She founded Women in International Security Canada (WIIS), which has provided support to more than a hundred young academics. These characteristics have greatly inspired every student who is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn from, and with, Dr. von Hlatky.”

This award was launched in 2016 as a way of recognizing unsung heroes in education. A representative of The Rhodes House said, “we wanted to highlight the contribution of teachers - whether primary, secondary or university level - who have not only educated but also inspired. There is a ripple effect - encouraging further education and the self-belief to take chances.”

Recipients of this year’s Rhodes Inspirational Educator Awards will be featured in the upcoming Rhodes magazine.
