Role and Responsibilities of Faculty Advisors

The faculty advisor is expected to be a mentor to their post-doctoral fellow in advanced research training and career preparation.

The responsibilities of faculty advisors include:

  • Providing an orientation to the research environment and department in which the post-doc will work. 
  • Communicating expectations about performance, skill requirements, standards for hours of work, safety standards and job responsibilities (e.g. research supervision, teaching, etc.) in writing as these will form the basis for performance evaluation.
  • Providing the resources necessary to support the collaborative research activities
  • Developing a clear understanding of the standards of ethical and scientific practice with respect to the conduct of research that includes appropriate recognition of contributions to intellectual property, publications, patents and other scholarly works.
  • Ensuring that research with commercial potential is discussed as part of the appointment as well as the protection of intellectual property.
  • Being accessible to the Post-doctoral Fellow to consult and discuss their progress and career goals.
  • Providing opportunities to network with researchers in the area of specialization.
  • Ensuring a safe research environment compliant with University and departmental regulations that is supportive of the research enterprise and is free from discrimination, intimidation or harassment.
