Message from The Principal

Today, Times Higher Education (THE) released the results of the 2021 Impact Rankings and Queen’s has done exceptionally well. Out of 1,240 institutions in 98 countries that participated this year, Queen’s has been ranked 1st in Canada and 5th in the world. Queen’s also achieved the highest first entry position of all institutions participating this year. These global rankings measure universities that are advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within and beyond their local communities. These goals align with a new vision for Queen’s and its future and provide us with an excellent starting place from which to launch a new strategy for our institution, helping us break down silos, provoke dialogue, and unite us in a common global purpose.

Queen’s placed in the top 10 worldwide for three of the SDGs, including in SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), 11 (Sustainable Cities), and 15 (Life on Land). For SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), we rank first in the world.

This strong result reflects the cross-university collaboration and partnership of over 70 units from all faculties, portfolios, and departments that contributed to and were represented in our submission. We should take great joy in this accomplishment as it demonstrates our ability and enormous potential to compete with other stellar institutions and also contribute on a global scale to the betterment of society through knowledge, discovery, and innovation. This is the start of a new phase for the University and I hope you will share my excitement over this news and be stirred in anticipation of the important and consequential work that lies ahead.
