Review of the Policy on Sexual Violence Involving Queen's University Students
July 21, 2020
The Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Task Force was asked by the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) to consider amendments to the notification procedure associated with Section 8.8 of the Policy on Sexual Violence Involving Queen’s University Students, and any other incidental changes.
The Task Force is made-up of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and staff from the Sexual Assault Centre Kingston. In developing the proposed amendments, several options were carefully considered to ensure the Policy aligned with the university’s commitment to supporting individuals who have experienced sexual violence. The proposed amendments ensure that students receive timely and accurate information regarding available support services, academic accommodations, and options for formally reporting the incident.
The proposed Policy revisions have been reviewed by the Senior Leadership Team and are now posted for feedback from the Queen’s community. A memo from the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Task Force provides an overview of the Policy review process, information considered, and the rationale behind the Task Force's proposed revisions. Please review both documents and provide any feedback by October 1, 2020 via provost@queensu.ca.
The proposed Policy revisions are based on the following principles regarding disclosures and confidentiality:
- Supporting a survivor-centered approach that prioritizes their needs and wishes whenever possible
- Ensuring that survivors receive timely and appropriate information regarding options, accommodations, and support services
- Providing clear and transparent information regarding the limits of confidentiality
