Interim Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic): Tom Harris

Interim Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Tom Harris is the university's chief academic, budget, and operating officer. In these roles, Dr. Harris is responsible for the development of the university’s budget and has oversight of academic affairs at Queen’s. Dr. Harris also works closely with the university’s senior leadership team to ensure operational planning is fully integrated across the university, aligns with the university’s strategic vision, and is supported by an appropriate allocation of resources.

Dr. Harris graduated from Queen's with a BSc in 1975 and returned in 1986 as a faculty member and Queen's National Scholar in the Department of Chemical Engineering. He served as Department Head from 1992 to 1996, and as Dean of Applied Science from 1996-2007. In 2010, he accepted the appointment of Vice-Principal (Advancement) and successfully led the University’s most recent comprehensive fundraising campaign, with benefactors contributing $640 million for a range of university priorities.

Professor Harris is an internationally-recognized researcher for his work in the analysis and assessment of control system and mathematical modelling and applications of statistics in chemical engineering. He is a fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and Canadian Academy of Engineering and received the Golden Apple from the Queen’s Engineering Society for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.  He is a lifetime member of the Alma Mater Society at Queen’s.
