PhD Student

Kat Snelling

I am in the second year of my PhD in Developmental Psychology. My research examines the role of prediction in language processing and learning.  From infancy, people make predictions while listening to speech. My research evaluates the impact of correct and incorrect predictions on language processing and word learning. One of my favourite things to do in Kingston is watching the sun set over Lake Ontario!

Undergraduate Students

Hannah Clark

My name is Hannah, and I am a fourth-year psychology major. I am currently completing my honours thesis in the lab and am interested in how children gather information from their social environments. Specifically, the role time horizons play in influencing children exploring a new source of information or exploiting an old one. This is my third year in the Language and Cognition Lab as I have worked as a research assistant in the lab for the past 2 years. I am so grateful and excited to have the opportunity to continue perusing my interest in developmental psychology in the Language and Cognition Lab. After my undergrad I plan to complete a graduate program in counselling psychology and become a child psychotherapist. My hobbies include playing sports, hiking, and seeing the world!

Lauren Gnat

Hi everyone. My name is Lauren, and I am in my fourth year at Queen’s and majoring in psychology. Last January, I joined the Language and Cognition Lab because I am very interested in exploring how cognitive and language processes develop over time and how research differs with children versus adults. My main areas of interest in psychology are psycholinguistics, developmental psychology, health psychology, behavioural economics, and clinical psychology. Outside of the lab, I love going on walks, volunteering, spending time with friends and family, travelling, keeping up with world events, watching TV shows, and playing with my dog, Sophie.

Alisa Gamayunova

I’m Alisa, a 4th year computing student, specializing in cognitive science! This is my first year volunteering with the Language and Cognition Lab, and I’m really excited to explore the topics of language learning and mental social network representations. In my spare time, I really love knitting and rollerblading by the water (don’t worry, not at the same time).

Anya den Hartog

My name is Anya, I am a fourth-year psychology major, and this is my third year volunteering in the lab! I love learning about developmental study design and its challenges. This year, I am excited to continue developing an engaging, online study for kids. Following graduation, I hope to pursue a master’s degree in school psychology. Outside of the lab, I love to sing, bake muffins, and read by the water!

Arun Chinnameyyappan

I’m currently in my fourth year of my BSc, majoring in life science and minoring in psychology. This is my second year volunteering as an RA in the language and cognition lab. My research interests include language development and acquisition, as well as the perception and creation of social networks. In my free time, I love running, reading, and playing with my cat.

Elif Gokcek

Hi everyone! My name is Elif, and I am a second-year majoring in BScH Psychology.  Cognitive psychology is a fascinating branch for me, and I am very excited that we get to explore it more in our lab. I am particularly interested in the question of common blame and the explore-exploit dilemma. Outside the lab, I love to read, journal, and hang out with my 2 cats and 2 dogs!

Camden Trepanier

My name is Camden Trepanier, and I am a second-year psychology major. I am interested in spending my undergraduate years trying to gain as much experience in various disciplines of psychology. Within the Language and Cognition lab I am interested in researching questions about blame attribution as well as the explore and exploit question of behaviour. When I’m not studying, I can usually be found spending time with my horse!

Kate Hamilton

I am a second-year undergraduate student majoring in psychology. I am interested in studying social and developmental psychology, as well as linguistics and speech pathology for children. This is my first year in the lab, and I'm excited to learn as much as I can from this experience while still being remote. In my free time I love to read (specifically historical fiction), do yoga, run, and bullet journal.

Mingzhu Mao

My name is Mingzhu Mao, and I am a fourth-year student majoring in Psychology and Concurrent Education. This is my first year as a research assistant in the Language and Cognition Lab. I am interested in language development and the influence of culture on it. After I graduate from Queen's, I am planning to pursue a master’s degree in school counselling. In my spare time, I love listening to music and enjoy anime and travelling.

Zoe Saine

My name is Zoe, and I am a 5th year psychology major. I am very interested in developmental psychology and more specially, language acquisition. I have previously completed a special directed lab project in the LCL where I looked at pupil dilation and language learning outcomes. During my time off, I work as a part-time Mental Health Case Manager. I love spending time with friends, walking my dog and going on hiking and camping adventures. After I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in clinical psychology.
