English for Academic Purposes

Program Description

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is an intensive language program that prepares students for university or college studies in English. Students have 22.5 hours of classroom instruction per week.

This full-time program is suitable for students planning to apply to university (at the undergraduate or graduate level) and college, and for students already enrolled in a post-secondary institution. Those who have completed their university education and who wish to improve their academic English skills will also be well served by this program.

QSoE Class

The EAP Program offers intensive, integrated practice in all four language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This program also puts particular emphasis on the knowledge, skills and strategies essential for academic success:

  • Vocabulary enhancement
  • Pronunciation comprehensibility
  • Grammatical knowledge
  • Academic writing techniques
  • Autonomous learning
  • Critical thinking

Program Levels

When students arrive at Queen's they undergo a placement process. Students are placed into one of the six levels:

  • 110 - Beginner
  • 120 - Elementary
  • 130 - Intermediate Level I
  • 132 - Intermediate Level II
  • 140 - Advanced
  • 150 - University Preparation


  • All students entering this program, even beginners, must have knowledge of the English alphabet and some basic vocabulary.
  • Students must be at least 18 years of age.

Applying to Queen's University

Students in this program may be eligible for an English Proficiency Exam Waiver when applying to undergraduate or graduate degree programs at Queen's University. For more information, please visit English Proficiency Exam Waiver section of this website.

Undergraduate Programs

Students applying to undergraduate degree programs at Queen's have an option of applying through QBridge - Queen's University Bridging Pathway. QBridge students may receive an offer of admission to the EAP Program prior to starting their degree studies at Queen's. Graduate Programs (Master's and Doctorate)

Students who apply to some graduate programs at Queen’s University may be offered admission conditional on meeting English language proficiency requirements.  Success for these students in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program meets the language requirements for the School of Graduate Studies.
