Winter 2021 - Karen Simons

I’ve never lived at the ranch for more than a month at a time, but I recognize my longing for it as a kind of homesickness – nostalgia, an old and common malady. Derived from the Greek words nostos (a return home) and algos (pain, grief, distress), “nostalgia” is precisely what sailors used to feel after months at sea …

KAREN SIMONS studied Greek and Latin literature before obtaining a PhD in English. She has published articles, translation, and creative non-fiction in various journals, including the International Journal of the Classical Tradition, Arion: A Journal of Humanities and the Classics, and Queen’s Quarterly. She taught English for several years at the University of Alberta and, to her surprise, has now lived in Edmonton’s Little Italy with her husband, Joe, for twenty.
