Ordinarily, cities gradually envelop you. First you are in farmland; then scattered houses, gas stations, suburbs, and warehouses emerge, until you are no longer in the countryside. Somewhere a transformation has occurred, and you can’t quite place where it happened. With La Paz it was not like that at all. Arriving by road from the airport, I found that the city was thoroughly hidden away, until suddenly we were upon it, as the road descended into a dry, barren valley bounded by sheer rock face and jammed with buildings. The sight was superb and, unless forewarned, nothing you would ever have anticipated …

Ian Birch taught business at universities in British Columbia and Ontario before retiring onto a wooded acreage in the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands to pursue diverse projects.
