Spring 2021 - Cicada Time


There was a time when I loved the autumn; its melancholy suited me. The thought of death was not yet personal; the sadness of dying things only made each day more vivid and more beautiful. In those days I lived in a world of the present moment, in a land where winter, when it came, did not seem so permanent a condition, and was sure to be followed by a full-fledged spring. Those were the days when if anything was eternal, it was summertime, where all I cared for of the universe was my grandparents and their farm …


Bio:

Ginny Ryan lives in St John’s, Newfoundland. She taught school in Labrador and then at two colleges in St John’s, and she recently retired from over two decades as Memorial University’s Writing Centre director. Her work has been published in TickleAce, the Newfoundland Quarterly, Newfoundland Studies, and Canadian Fiction Magazine, and in 2010 she recorded a CD of her songs – Great Wings in Flight.
