     of the Artist

Meditative and evocative, The Souvenir is a kaleidoscope of a film from British auteur Joanna Hogg. Through a striking portrait of the artist as a young woman, Hogg explores the formative power of first love and the beauty that blooms from tragedy. This semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama is Hogg's fourth feature and perhaps her most personal. The film is a house of mirrors where film and filmmaker seem to reflect forever. With The Souvenir, life imitates art because the main character and the director have both arrived by the end of the film. Julie comes into her creative own, and industry veteran Hogg achieves her breakout feature in North America. It won the World Cinema Dramatic prize at Sundance 2019, and principal photography for a sequel is already underway.

LEE MARSHALL is film reviewer for Queen's Quarterly.
