“… the great State of Canada”
Donald Trump
I’m making goo-goo faces
at the baby sitting on her
mother’s lap, wearing a
handknitted toque with red
maple leaf but the baby’s
not as amused as her father,
squished next to them,
grinning at my attempts.
A fur-lined Elmer Fudd
cap frames his face. And
now we are turning into
Spadina Station, all of us
tilting in unison. A smile
brightens the baby’s face
as if this were a roller
coaster of bundled bodies
and a few bewildered
faces. As we approach the
station my phone pings
with concerned texts from
siblings in New England.
I look up at the baby
whose expression seems
to say, This too shall pass,
as if she knows things
I don’t, as if it’ll be okay
if we continue together,
all of us leaning
in the same direction.
