Spring 2025 - Mannequin

 

Back in the kitchen I pour myself a lime and tonic. (I couldn’t be bothered with the gin.) I’m sipping absently, nodding at my mother-in-law as if I’m hearing what she’s saying. I replay the picnic table conversation. I replay similar conversations over the past sixteen years. I sip. I nod.

    I have the answer. I’m done.

    I grab my purse and head for the door. My mother-in-law stops mid-sentence …
