Many real-life versions of the Munro Woman have existed in every corner of society, with all their resentments and hopes, all their unused talent and their derided intelligence, providing more material and more ways for Munro’s imagination to express itself. They have been a gift to her talent, and she has given them in return a portrait of themselves.
