She told her parents she was working an extra shift that afternoon, for extra money.

    She told her parents she would be visiting her sick friend afterwards, when her shift was over, to cheer her up. She, the friend, not her, needed cheering up.

    She told her parents she would be home late. She told her parents that she would not be home for dinner that night, so please don’t worry about her. Don’t go to the trouble of cooking for her. She had a ham sandwich in her bag and five dollars in her wallet. She was good. She was prepared. She was fine.
