The Real North is an Idea

by Lindsay Bell and Jesse Colin Jackson

Spring 2020 - The Real North Is an Idea

More often than not, Hay River is derided as “not the real north.” Similarly, the High Rise is supposedly not the real Hay River. How can spaces – such as a crucial transportation hub – be considered not real? How and why are some spaces and people considered to be authentically representative of something larger, and others not? Hay River, the North, and even Canada in the broadest sense cannot be understood without understanding the High Rise and the stories it holds.

Lindsay Bell has been a schoolteacher in Alaska and the Northwest Territories and is currently Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Western Ontario. She is completing a book about the experiences of local people affected by extractive industries in the Canadian Arctic.

Jesse Colin Jackson is a Canadian artist currently living in Southern California, where he is Assistant Professor at the University of California, Irvine. He spent the summers of his youth in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories
