John has been Executive Director of the Executive Seminars on Corporate and Investment Real Estate since its creation by Queen's University in 2004. Since 2000 he has been a professor in the Queen's School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP), where he teaches commercial real estate to graduate students. He also teaches real estate management in the Queen's School of Business and environmental policy in the School of Environmental Studies.

In 2013, John established the Queen's Real Estate Roundtable, a unique and not-for-profit commercial real estate industry group focused on executive development, applied research and senior-level networking. Membership is by invitation only, and is limited to a maximum of 25 companies from across the commercial real estate sector. In addition to its other activities, the Q25 offers a number of events each year, including the three Executive Seminars on Corporate and Investment Real Estate.

John carries out research and consults to the commercial real estate sector on strategic planning, environmental issues, financial analysis, urban planning and conflict management; and is a frequent speaker and media commentator on these issues. He has served as an expert witness on real estate issues in commercial civil litigation and labour law. He is a member of the Commercial Real Estate Council of Gerson Lehrman Group, the world's leading expert referral network.

John holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science in Planning from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Science from The University of Western Ontario. He is a Registered Professional Planner (Ontario) and a Full Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MCIP). He holds a Canadian Private Pilot License, and has been an active private pilot for nearly 30 years.
