The Art of Research Photo Contest 2019

The 2019 Art of Research photo contest is an opportunity for Queen’s faculty, students, staff and alumni to showcase their research, scholarly, and artistic work. The competition is aimed at providing a creative and accessible method of sharing and celebrating the ground-breaking research being done by current and past Queen’s community members.

The act of research is a beauteous endeavor whether in a group or solitary, or whether you are working in the lab, field, studio, or archives. The subject of the photograph or images is limited only by your imagination. Capture a moment under the microscope, in the lab or on your computer. Go out in the community and explore human dimensions and the beauty of nature. Be global …

Art of Research winners 2017-2018

The deadline to submit your photo is March 1, 2019


The 2019 contest will allow entries into four categories:

  • Community Collaborations
  • Invisible Discoveries
  • Out in the Field
  • Art in Action


There will be eight prizes of $500 awarded:

Category Prizes (6)

A prize of $500 will be awarded to the top-ranked photo in each of the four categories above.  Two additional prizes will be granted for the following:

Best Description: To recognize the most creative description for an image

People’s Choice: Determined by an online vote by members of the Queen’s community

Anniversary Prizes (2)

To celebrate the anniversaries of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, two special prizes will be awarded to honour these significant milestones. Winners will be determined amongst all submitted entries, regardless of category submission or faculty affiliation.

Queen's Education 50th Anniversary: Awarded to the submission that celebrates research and scholarship in education

Queen's Engineering 125th Anniversary: Awarded to the submission that best demonstrates how engineering-specific research pursuits are likely to affect positive change in all our daily lives


All entries will be adjudicated by a multi-stakeholder committee struck by the Office of the Vice-Principal (University Relations). All entries may be featured on the Queen’s research webpage and in other Queen’s materials related to research promotion initiatives.

Submission rules and details

Deadline: March 1, 2019.
All entries must be received by the contest closing date.
Late entries will not be accepted.
Who is eligible?:
Any current Queen’s faculty, staff, student or alumni.

By signing and completing the entry form, the photographer consents to the entry of their submission and agrees to abide by the following contest rules:

  1. Only one entry per person.
  2. To enter, please complete an entry form.
  3. Images must be photo quality (3000x2400 pixels or larger) and in JPEG format. File size should be very large, but saved to a maximum of 8MB. Images not meeting these specifications will not be accepted.
  4. By entering the contest, the photographer grants the right to Queen’s University to publish their photo in print (brochures, advertisements) or electronic mediums (web; social media) to promote and/or highlight research, university activities, and to promote subsequent photo contests. The photographer will not receive monetary compensation, however, photo credit will be given where possible.
