Campus Community Consultation

Student Code of Conduct

Queen’s faculty, students, and staff are invited to provide feedback on the proposed amendments to the Student Code of Conduct.

The purpose of the proposed revisions is to align the Student Code of Conduct’s definitions of harassment and discrimination to those in the draft Harassment and Discrimination Prevention and Response Policy, which was released for public comment in December 2020. The proposed amendments to the draft Harassment and Discrimination Prevention and Response Policy and the Student Code of Conduct are designed to promote a respectful and inclusive living, learning, and working environment. The revisions will support the university’s commitment to preventing harassment and discrimination through education and other proactive measures and support the effective response to reports and complaints of harassment and discrimination.

The revisions to the Harassment and Discrimination Prevention and Response Policy were developed by a working group, which is comprised of representatives from across the campus, including students, faculty, and staff. The working group has undertaken an extensive consultation process, including several meetings with student groups.

The proposed amendments to the Student Code of Conduct include:

  • aligning the definitions of “harassment” and “discrimination” with those in the draft Harassment and Discrimination Prevention and Response Policy
  • the addition of educational commentary on discrimination and protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Again, this educational commentary is aligned with that being proposed in the Harassment and Discrimination Prevention and Response Policy; and,
  • additional language to make clear that violating protected grounds under the Human Rights Code is considered as a factor in the sanctioning process.

Student, staff, and faculty were encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed revisions to the Student Code of Conduct until March 18, 2021. Feedback was submitted through an anonymous feedback form, by email to provost@queensu.ca, or through a direct conversation through the Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic).
