Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees

2020 - Recipients

All in-person Convocation ceremonies for 2020 were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Office of the University Registrar is working on plans for alternate ceremonies. All individuals who were to receive an Honorary Degree in 2020 will have an opportunity to reschedule their ceremony. The university will reach out to these individuals in late 2020 with additional information.

2021 - Process Update

All Nominations were submitted by the March 2020 deadline for consideration for an honorary degree to be received in 2021 will be considered by the Honorary Degrees Committee on an altered timeline due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Please contact the Secretariat at senate@queensu.ca if you have questions about a nomination package you submitted.

 

2022 - Nomination Process Update

Introduction

The Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees of Queen's University invites nominations for honorary degrees to all who qualify, including women, Aboriginal persons, visible minorities/racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQ persons, to be awarded at future convocations. The timing of these is to be determined.

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Faculty and staff at Queen's are not eligible for nomination until at least three to five years after retirement
  • An active politician is not eligible
  • The person must be living
  • Nominations that reflect the diversity of Canadian society are encouraged

Selection Process

March 1, 2021 - deadline for nomination forms. All materials submitted are held in confidence

March 2021 - Senate Committee on Honorary Degrees meets to review nominations and make recommendations

April 2021 - recommendations approved by Senate

Summer 2021 - invitations to candidates sent

Fall 2021 - list of honorees made public

Selection Criteria

  • Outstanding contributions to discipline or field of work, to community, to society or to the University
  • Nominee may come from any country

2022 Convocation Dates

Specific dates for Convocation ceremonies in 2022 are expected to be announced near the end of 2021.

A completed nomination form is essential and is all that is strictly required for submission to the Committee and the Senate.  You may include up to 15 pages of supporting documentation (curriculum vitae, letters of support, etc.) to assist in the deliberations of the Committee.  Only the completed nomination form will be presented to Senate.

You may reproduce the form, vary the length of the sections, but the content is limited to two pages.

Please take great care in completing the section "Reasons for Recommending Award of an Honorary Degree" since the Committee focuses on this section in making its selection.

Please note that in order to assure confidentiality nominators should not contact nominees.
