“HELPING SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT AFTER SEXUAL VIOLENCE” (Deb Keogh)

When someone you care about experiences a highly distressing life event it can be difficult to know how to offer support and help.  People sometimes fear saying or doing the wrong thing.  Whether the person you care about has been in a car accident, survived a natural disaster, experienced a sexual or physical act of violence, or any life threatening/  traumatic life events, there ARE things you can do to support them.

This session will provide participants with basic information about the kinds of things that can be helpful. You’ll learn about Queens and community based services and resources that can help you navigate a challenging situation with more awareness, comfort and confidence.  Visit http://queensu.ca/studentwellness/workshops/

Orientation Week Guest Speaker - Monday September 4, 2017

This Orientation Week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Farrah Khan to Queen’s as our annual Consent Speaker. Farrah is a nationally recognized public speaker and educator on sexual violence, and is currently working as Ryerson University’s Sexual Violence Support and Education Coordinator. She is co-chair of the Ontario Provincial Roundtable on Violence Against Women, has co-created several community-centred initiatives, and is a leader in many grassroots equity movements. Farrah spoke to the incoming class about the meaning and importance of consent and how to ask for consent in order to continue to foster a culture of consent on our campus.

Farrah gave two presentations to the incoming first year students and their Dons on Monday September 4th.
