Aboriginal Students

Queen's University is situated on traditional Anishinabe and Haudenosaunee Territory.

Indigenous 1 student admission regulation: Queen’s University School of Graduate Studies welcomes and encourages inquiries and applications for all our graduate programs from Indigenous candidates. Indigenous candidates’ academic, cultural, personal and professional background, and other factors indicative of capacity for graduate level study and research, will be considered and evaluated accordingly on an individual basis by the applicable graduate program personnel.

To be considered under this regulation, applicants must self-identify as Indigenous upon application for admission to Queen’s University School of Graduate Studies.

Applications and Admissions

There are many aspects to consider before applying to a graduate program and then there is the application process itself.

Registration and Fees

Considering and understanding all the costs associated with studying is important to allow you to concentrate on your studies. Enrolling in graduate school also has a number of steps. Make sure you don't miss any, so you can start your program on time.

Awards and Funding

Why Self-Identify

One of our most common questions relates to funding your graduate degree. While funding is not always guaranteed, it is important to research all of your options.  Some awards such as the Sutherland Award below, are done internally at Queen's. You don't apply yourself, but names are put forward. The program can only do this though, if they are  aware that you are an Aboriginal student.

General Bursary

It is the priority of Queen's University to help those students in the greatest financial difficulty who have the fewest options to secure funding on their own. The Queen's General Bursary is a non-repayable grant available to students in all years of study who have a demonstrated financial need. The Queen's General Bursary is meant to supplement, not replace student and family resources. Students are expected to explore all sources of available funding.

Band Funding

If you are registered with your community & have a status card, then you will be eligible for postsecondary funding. Please note that you will need to apply for this funding and that it is not guaranteed. Every band distributes their post-secondary funding differently, and they even have different deadlines, so the best thing for you to do is to contact the education person at your band office to discuss the process and the timelines you need to be aware of. The linked website will bring you to a database of contact information for bands across Canada.

Metis Nation’s Education office; while Inuit applicants should contact the designated organizations or the Aboriginal Affairs Northern Development Canada regional office to inquire about postsecondary funding available.

Bursary for Indigenous Students

The $15,000 need-based bursary is “awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to Aboriginal students in any year of any faculty or school at Queen’s University.” Recipients may be full- or part-time students.

Applications are to be made via SOLUS to the Office of the University Registrar, Student Awards by Oct. 31, 2017. Please visit for information on Student Awards at Queen’s.

The Robert Sutherland Fellowships

Value $15,000

The Robert Sutherland Fellowships (formerly known as Graduate Dean's Scholarships for Aboriginal and Canadian Visible Minority Students) were established in 1992 to help diversify our campus by attracting applications from visible minorities that are under-represented at Queen's. Awards are available to incoming Aboriginal students, African Canadian students and other Canadian visible minority students. The awards will be made through a competition held each year in May-June.  Application must be made when a student applies for graduate study at Queen's.  

2017-18 OGS Awards for Aboriginal students

Aboriginal awards: Queen’s University shall allocate up to two 2017-18 OGS awards to Aboriginal graduate students. There is a section on  the OGS application for  eligible applicants to self-identify as an Aboriginal person and to be considered for one of these awards.


Students accepted for full-time admission into full -time graduate programs are considered for limited funding from the department/program. In addition to department/program funding, there are some internal fellowships and scholarships available annually. Prospective or enrolled students do not make individual application for most internal fellowships or scholarships administered by the School of Graduate Studies. Departments/Programs are notified of all annual fellowship competitions, and nominate eligible students appropriately. Most of these fellowship allocation decisions are made in June.

Queen’s SAGE is an interdisciplinary and cross-institutional peer-mentoring program designed to support Aboriginal graduate students with the successful transition into and completion of their graduate programs.

Alumni Networks/Mentors

Four Directions has a peer helper program and with the help of Queen's Alumni Relations department have launched an Aboriginal Alumni Chapter.
