Dr Cheng Wei Tony Yang

Dr. Cheng Wei Tony Yang - PhD, University of British Columbia

Intern at Merck Canada

PHMI Class of 2021

What drew you to the PHMI program at Queen’s?

There are several existing programs in Canada that teach pharmaceutical and healthcare innovation development already. However, the guaranteed internship in industry sets Queen’s PHMI apart from the competitors.

What were you doing when you entered the program? Were you already looking for opportunities in industry?

I was managing the translational research program in chronic airway diseases at The University of British Columbia and Providence Health Care. I was looking for opportunities to broaden my knowledge regarding the process of commercializing medical innovation.

What has been your favourite experience so far?

The opportunity to meet motivated and like-minded individuals who want to make a difference in patients’ lives (both through the coursework and through the paid internship) has been truly inspirational.

What is the most interesting thing you learned? Perhaps an “ah-ha” moment that has changed your view on something?

Prior to my internship interviews, I was very worried about my lack of “disease expertise”. However, I’m pleasantly surprised to discover that most of the Oncology Medical Science Liaisons at my current internship company do not have an academic background in Oncology. This fact illustrates the importance of soft skills in industry.

If someone were considering applying to PHMI, what advice would you give them?

Keep an open mind!
