an anti-racism message from the director of the school

Dear members of the SPS community,

I know that many of you have been deeply affected by the recent events in both Canada and the USA, which have cast stark light on the systemic racism that so many of members of our community struggle with every day.  Today, I want to offer our solidarity and support to all who face these challenges.

The School of Policy Studies has an important role to play in contributing to real solutions to these challenges.  In doing so, however, we must also recognize that our own institution can do a better job in addressing these issues. I would encourage you to review the Principal’s statement on anti-racism as well as the Provost’s statement.

Since I have joined the School as Director, concerns of equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity (EDII) have played a role in all of our decision-making.  We have been working to address the diversity of our instructors and held these principles high in student admissions.  We have signalled strong support for our students in launching an equity club, an ongoing initiative which I look forward to seeing bear fruit in the coming year.  And, we have worked very hard to support a new Indigenous governance stream within our School, which in 2021 should welcome it’s first students.  In 2020-21, we will be soliciting EDII representatives from our student body to join our School meetings, in addition to the current representation that our students have on that body.

Many of you may be struggling with the events of recent days, particularly in light of the ongoing pandemic and the incredible stress that it has put on our lives.  For our students seeking help in coping with current events, student support counsellors are available, as well as Empower Me and Good2Talk, which can provide 24/7 access to a counsellor. Staff and faculty may access support through our Employee and Family Assistance (EFAP) program. Our Human Rights and Equity Office is also available to consult with any member of our university community.

I know that the members of our School will hold us to the highest standards when it comes to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigeneity.  We can and must do better!

In solidarity,

Warren Mabee
