Awards for Nursing Students

The following awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors. 

Students who are currently registered at Queen's University can apply for the following awards. Students will be notified by either the Student Awards Office or their Faculty if they have been selected for an award. 

Please pay close attention to the application instructions and deadlines.


Susan Nelles Scholarship

Established by Susan Nelles Pine, B.N.Sc. `78, a courageous and devoted paediatric nurse, in memory of her father James Nelles, Meds `50 and her brother David Nelles, Meds `78. James and David Nelles were dedicated paediatricians.  This scholarship is awarded to a student with an interest in parent-child nursing entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science program on the basis of academic excellence in Nursing 370 (Family-Centred Nursing Care) and a pass in Nursing 371 (Practicum in Family-Centred Nursing Care). Application is made by letter to the Awards Committee of the School of Nursing and should demonstrate one's interest in this field. Deadline for application for the award is 31 July.

Northern Canada Nursing Study Award

Established in February 2021 by Phyllis Durnford, BNSc 1969. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in the fourth year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science program in the Faculty of Health Sciences wishing to broaden their studies through a practicum placement, with preference given to a placement in northern Canada: (Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon) or northern rural and remote areas in other provinces. The award may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University. The application process consists of an application submitted in March to the School of Nursing Awards Committee.  Selection will be made by the School of Nursing Awards Committee in the Faculty of Health Sciences in consultation with the Office of the University Registrar, Student Awards.

Dorothy Riches Scholarship

Established by Mrs. Marian Campbell, B.N.Sc. 1949, to honour the memory of Dorothy Riches, the first Director of the School of Nursing, Queen's University, from 1946 to 1949. Awarded to a student with an interest and high standing in psychiatric/mental health nursing entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science program. Application is made by letter to the Awards Committee of the School of Nursing and should outline one's interest in this field. One letter of reference is required. Deadline for application is 30 April.
