Welcome to FYNIRS!
The Queen's FYNIRS (First-Year Not In Residence Student) is a group of current first-year students living off-campus, and upper-year student leaders known as "Landlords." FYNIRS aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for first-year students that do not live in residence, but still in Kingston and the surrounding areas. Our goal is to help ease your transition into the Queen's community and provide specific resources for those who live off-campus – whether that be with family, friends, or in your own space!
FYNIRS offers Orientation events, as well as year long support. Visit the links to the left to learn more about our Orientation and Fall Programming! Check out the Landlords section to meet our upper-year student leaders.
If you want information or have any questions, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
FYNIRS Orientation registration has now closed. If you are interested in joining FYNIRS for the academic year, please contact Alicia at email@example.com.
Welcome to FYNIRS everyone! My name is Ally Hirniak McKeown (she/her), a third-year Concurrent Education student with medials/teachables in English and French. This is actually my second time as a Landlord (orientation leader) and so I cannot wait to meet all of you new FYNIRS! I'm originally from Brockville, ON, but I moved to Kingston by myself at the start of my studies at Queen's so Kingston has become my home now. While living in Kingston, I have made amazing friends, adopted some guinea pigs, organized and participated in numerous events through FYNIRS, explored the town's adventures, and I even got married last year! During my time at Queen's, I have been heavily involved with FYNIRS since my initial year, while also tutoring low-income kids for the Helen Tuft Outreach program. I cannot wait to see and hear what fun adventures you will all have to share while at Queen's!
Hi everyone! My name is Payton Cherneskie and I use she/her pronouns. I am from Deseronto Ontario which is where I currently live while completing my undergrad at Queen’s University. I am a third-year nursing student, and I am thrilled to be a part of your orientation experience as a Landlord for FYNIRS. This year will be my second year as a Landlord for FYNIRS orientation. Additionally, I have volunteered for other Queen’s Programs and clubs such as Autism Speaks Canada Queen’s University, Kids4Kids, and the Queen’s Community Connection Program. There are so many opportunities, so be sure to find what inspires you! A fun fact about me is that I have a passion for preforming.
Hey! My name is Phoebe, pronounced just like the character from Friends, my pronouns are She/They and my family lives in Toronto. I am a second year health sciences student and a Landlord for this program. I was a member of BISC student council last year focusing on outreach and planning. Some fun facts about me, I was born with a very reduced sense of smell so when my dog was skunked I was the only one who could go near enough to wash him, as I point blank couldn't smell it. I am an American/Canadian citizen and I play Dungeons and Dragons twice a week with people all over the world! I really enjoy playing League of Legends and Valorant too. In League I play support, mid lane, and jungle; in Valorant I am a Sage/Viper/Killjoy main.
Hi I'm Riley! I use He/Him pronouns and I am from Kingston itself, I am going into my fourth year at Queen’s looking to graduate with a degree in computer science and will be a landlord with FYNIRS this year! In my first year I participated in the FYNIRS orientation and have volunteered as a landlord ever since. I love swimming, playing dungeons and dragons, and am a part time IT guy for my family. Can't wait to get to know everyone!
Hi everyone! My name is Sara Duaibes and I'm from Georgetown, ON. I'm going into my second year as a Life Sciences specialization student! My role in the First Years Not In Residence Student program is Landlord. During my time at Queen’s I have been a first year representative for Queens MSF: Doctors Without Borders and Queens Health Care and Business. This year I am involved in both of these clubs as a Marketing Director and publications coordinator. This year I will also be a QSuccess mentor and have joined Queens UNICEF as the graphics coordinator. I have worked at the Georgetown Hospital with patients of dementia in the long-term and rehabilitation care unit and I hope I can continue this in Kingston! I love to swim (used to be competitive), travel and bake/cook.
Hello everyone! My name is Steacy Coombs (she/her) and I’m from Guelph, ON. I’m just about to start my PhD in Chemical Engineering. I completed both my undergraduate and master’s degrees at Queen’s University, and I have loved every second of it! My role at FYNIRS is a Landlord. I have previously been involved in Queen’s Biomedical Innovation Team (QBiT) as a design team member, and Woman in Science and Engineering (WiSE) as a mentor. This year, I am also involved with the Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEGSA) as External Affairs Coordinator, and a new club called Queen’s Women’s Health Advocacy (QWHA) as Spotlights Coordinator for the External Research Team. I’m also actively involved in the Kingston community, specifically at Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area, where me and my 5-year-old golden retriever walk every day!
What do FYNIRS do?
FYNIRS provides social support and resources for students living Off-campus in their first year. FYNIRS runs live orientation events, as well as programming throughout the year to connect you with your peers, upper year supports, and resources at Queen’s.
What are Landlords?
Landlord is the title of FYNIRs Orientation Leaders. They are the ones who will be leading you through activities and will answer any of your questions. See our "Meet the Team" tab to learn more about our Landlords!
Do I have to attend all of the events during Orientation and the rest of the year?
We encourage all of our students to participate in and attend all Orientation activities! However, our Landlords are friendly and accommodating, and will make sure you don't feel left out if you choose not to participate in an event. We also encourage you to participate in our activities during the school year as the fun doesn't stop after Orientation!
Do I need to register for FYNIRS?
Yes! FYNIRS is a free program and registration helps with the planning process to make sure we can accommodate everyone. To participate in FYNIRS Orientation you will need to be registered as a FYNIR so we can share the virtual event links.
Can I participate in both FYNIRS and Faculty Orientation?
Yes, you can attend FYNIRS and Faculty Orientation events if you register for both! We recommend attending Faculty Orientation as you will learn faculty-specific information. FYNIR Orientation is a great way to find extra information suited for students that do not live in residence, but still live in Kingston in the surrounding areas.
What happens to FYNIRS after Orientation?
FYNIRS doesn’t end after Orientation! We have monthly events and newsletters throughout the year, and your Landlords will still be there to support you!
