Existere Cast Member

Position:                 Existere Cast Member

Term of Position:     January 2019 to September 2019
Remuneration:         This is an unpaid position

The Student Experience Office (SEO) in the Division of Student Affairs at Queen's offers programs and services to orient students to university life, to support their successful transitions into and through university, and to encourage leadership development, student engagement, and co-curricular involvement while at Queen's. Our goal is to support a holistic student experience that prepares students to achieve not only their personal, social, and academic goals, but also their professional and community aspirations.
Existere is a social action theatre program that aims to raise awareness around important issues relevant to first-year students coming to Queen's, including living in residence, academics, health, sex, consent, healthy relationships, alcohol, and diversity. The theatre production is a favourite part of Orientation for many students. All of the scenes presented in the show are written by the cast members and directors. The cast is assembled in January, and cast members rehearse during the winter term by discussing relevant issues and messages, and working together and individually to brainstorm, create, and write concepts or scenes for the September performance. The cast returns to Kingston near the end of August where they work to put together the final show for Orientation Week.

Reporting to the Existere Directors and the Coordinator, Student Development responsible for the Existere program, cast member(s) will incorporate relevant student issues and trends to produce a show that is sensitive in manner and that stimulates conversation in order to meet student needs during University Orientation. Cast members will be required to contribute to a positive, safe, and creative environment during rehearsals and for students attending shows. Through regular meetings with the Directors and the Student Development Coordinator, and through consultation with various campus partners, cast members will have the resources to put on a performance that is consistent with university policies and messaging.

Under the guidance of the directors, the Student Experience Office and other campus partners, the cast will:
  • Discuss and explore aspects of their own first-year experience
  • Actively participate in the development of show structure and framework
  • Adhere to confidentiality agreements and show professionalism and respect towards all Existere community members including fellow cast members, the Existere Leadership Team and Queen’s staff
  • Write meaningful and creative scenes that explore issues incoming students may encounter
  • Perform the show for first-year students during Orientation Week
  • Promote and contribute through respectful, responsible, and inclusive behaviours for students during their time both at Queen’s and in the Kingston community through scene writing and role modeling

Existere Cast Members must:

  • Demonstrate creativity
  • Exercise good judgment and sound reasoning
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Possess excellent organizational skills
  • Be familiar with campus resources and student issues/needs
  • No acting experience is necessary.

Existere Cast Member(s) must:
  • Be available to meet once to twice a week starting in the Winter 2019 semester
  • Be a registered Queen’s student in their first year of study at Queen's
  • Must be able to commit to 10 days of rehearsals on Queen’s Campus starting August 19, 2019.
  • Must be available for rehearsals and performances during the 2019 University Orientation period

The Existere Cast Member(s) will:
  • Have a position term from January 2019 to September 2019.
  • Be asked to establish meeting times with the Existere Directors at the beginning of the position period.
  • Discuss other time commitments and academic course load with the Existere Directors to maintain balance.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures as outlined by Queen’s University Student Code of Conduct.
  • Attend and engage in all position training and orientation
