Counselling Services

Counselling Services supports the personal, academic and social development of students at Queen’s through a range of programs and services that aim to meet student needs. These include one-on-one appointments, skills and therapy groups, new 24/7 options including the university’s new online wellness resource called TAO, Empower Me, and a range of mental health resources.

Summer 2019: One-on-one counselling remains a centerpiece of what we offer.  We are working to reduce wait times for initial appointments by introducing a hybrid model that focuses on 30-minute same-day sessions, and has the flexibility to offer some pre-booked longer sessions if determined it is needed.

To make an appointment with an experienced professional counsellor in our central location in the Cote Sharp Student Wellness Centre, and most of our cross-campus embedded locations, call 613-533-2506, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. If all same-day appointments have been filled, please call the next day, starting at 8:00am, for same day access.

It is anticipated that access to care will be much faster than past wait times of five or six weeks for a first appointment. The goal is to facilitate quicker access when students feel they need support. This model has been successfully implemented at many universities, and has been adopted after consultations with institutions that have seen decreased wait times and increased student satisfaction with access to service.

Once you are working with a counsellor, they will work collaboratively with you to develop an individualized care plan, which may include additional pre-booked sessions with the same counsellor, as well as referrals to skills or therapy groups, mental health resources, and/or other campus services and programs.

Crisis support continues to be offered to students with immediate needs. If you are in crisis, please come to the Cote Sharp Student Wellness Centre, Student Wellness Services, on the ground floor of Mitchell Hall, 69 Union St., between 9:00-5:00, Monday to Friday.

You can also access crisis and counselling services, 24/7, in many languages, through Empower Me at 1-844-741-6389, and Good2Talk, a provincial 24/7 post-secondary student helpline at 1-866-925-5454.
