Green Research Centres and Institutes

ASU is accredited by CALA (formerly CAEAL) to the standards of ISO/IEC 17025. We are an environmental analytical laboratory, and have been providing analytical services at Queen’s University for over 25 Years.

The unit is available to assist industry, government, the university community and the public with analytical chemistry problems. The ASU also has experience to assist with environmental assessments and associated activities.

The ASU has aided 50 professors in 20 different departments of the university and over 200 industrial organizations with chemical analysis problems. The unit also accommodates the special needs of clients such as analytical method development and specific research projects, both large and small.

BIOCAP Canada Foundation

An internationally-recognized national research foundation that helped lay the groundwork for the transformation to a sustainable bioeconomy in Canada, BIOCAP was founded at Queen's in 1998. It provided an innovative and effective model for building partnerships and integrating research insights with science and investment policy. While the organization officially closed in 2008, universities, businesses and governments across the country continue to build on BIOCAP's legacy.

Queen's Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy (QIEEP)

The Queen's Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy arises from the conviction that trans-disciplinary research increases the scope and influence of work that is already being done. The Institute promotes the meeting of unlike minds; it offers a crossroads where the best academic research intersects with the challenges of policy makers and industry.

Energy and Power Electronics Applied Research Laboratory (ePEARL)

Energy and Power Electronics Applied Research Laboratory (ePEARL), headed by Praveen Jain (Electrical and Computer Engineering) focuses on the use of electrical energy. Research includes high frequency ballasts for high intensity discharge lamps and compact fluorescent light bulbs, improvements in grid connected inverters for wind, solar and hybrid systems. Energy efficiency improvements from the integration of power architecture in integrated circuits is another goal of the laboratory.

Fuel Cell Research Centre (FCRC)

The Queen's-RMC Fuel Cell Research Centre (FCRC) is Canada's leading university-based research and development organization in partnership with industry dedicated to advancing the knowledge base for addressing the key technology challenges to the commercialisation of fuel cell applications.

GreenCentre Canada

A $9.1-million National Centre of Excellence, was established at Queen's in February 2009. The new centre brings together Canada's leading Green Chemistry researchers, industry partners and commercialization professionals to develop cleaner, less energy-intensive solutions for traditional chemical and manufacturing processes.

Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Laboratory (PEARL)

The Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL) is a group of about 30 research scientists, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and other scientists dedicated to using paleolimnological techniques to provide historical perspectives to environmental change. Such data are required to define natural environmental variability, to generate and test hypotheses, and to evaluate computer models that are now being used for the study of global environmental change.

PEARL is recognized worldwide as a training ground for the development and application of long-term approaches toward the study of natural and human impacts on lakes.

Solar Calorimetry Lab (SCL)

The Solar Calorimetry Laboratory (SCL) operates under the direction of Stephen J. Harrison.

This site was established within the National Research Council of Canada in 1977 and subsequently moved to Queen's University (Mechanical Engineering Department) in 1985. During that period the objective of the research program at the SCL was the development and evaluation of test methods and standards for solar heating systems and components.

Since that time, the scope of activities has increased and current research topics include the design, analysis and modeling of thermal systems in the HVAC and solar energy fields. Efforts are directed at improving the thermal performance and energy efficiency of both individual components and complete systems.

Sustainable Bio-Economy Centre (SBC)

Established in 2008 at Queen's, builds on the groundwork laid by the BIOCAP Canada Foundation. The Centre's focus is on moving society from the current fossil-fuel-based economy to the biological resources-based economy of the future.
