This website is meant to serve as a repository of websites and resources related to the New Frontiers in Research Fund - Exploration competition. The objective of this program is to generate opportunities researchers to conduct high-risk, high-reward, interdisciplinary research not available through funding opportunities currently offered by the Tri-Council agencies.

  1. URS has created an LOI checklist for this program (PDF, 749 KB; Net ID & password required). The checklist summaries information from the LOI instructions, Convergence Portal, and the recent NFRF webinars.
  2. URS has uploaded samples of successful applications from the 2018 NFRF competition (PDF, 2.0 MB; Net ID & password required). The examples include the following sections: project summary; high risk description; high reward description; and a description of the interdisciplinary nature of the research. NB - the application format has changed since 2018 (see new LOI instructions). If you are looking for additional example files, please contact your discipline specific RPA.

Review Process - University Research Services

The deadline to receive an LOI REVIEW from University Research Services is August 22, 2019. Note that the review is not a scientific review (i.e. a review by a researcher in your discipline). The review is performed by a Research Projects Advisor at University Research Services. The advisor will:

  • Perform a detailed reading and content review of your application (includes editing suggestions)
  • Send you detailed comments / feedback

If you would like to have your application reviewed by University Research Services, please email Traci Allen ( your proposal documents no later than August 22 2019.  Please remember that the closer your application is to complete, the more useful the review process will be. LOIs will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Submission Process

  • Your NOI, LOI, and full application must be submitted using the agency's Convergence Portal. When you hit submit your application will be electronically directed to the University Research Services for review and approval. Then, administrators at University Research Services will forward your application on to the funding agency on your behalf. Please note the internal submission deadlines for Queen's above.

  • A TRAQ DSS is ONLY required at the full application for this funding opportunity. Applicants do NOT need to submit TRAQ DSSs at the NOI or LOI stage.
