This website is meant to serve as a repository of websites and resources related to the New Frontiers in Research Fund - Exploration competition. The objective of this program is to generate opportunities for early career researchers (ECRs) to conduct high-risk, high-reward, interdisciplinary research not available through funding opportunities currently offered by the Tri-Council agencies.

  1. URS has created new help files for this competition. A Net ID & password is required to view the following files:
    1. The Application Checklist (PDF, 250 KB) provides a detailed, step-by-step summary of what is required in the full application;
    2. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) guidance document * UPDATED February 8, 2019 (PDF 117 KB) summarizes resources available at Queen's and elsewhere to help PIs address the EDI evaluation criterion, and;
    3. The High Risk guidance document (PDF, 495 KB) provides concrete examples from other funding agencies of "high-risk, high reward" projects.
  2. The NFRF application deadline has been extended to February 14, 2019; all of the Queen's internal deadlines have been updated accordingly. The application review deadline has been extended to February 4, 2019 and the TRAQ deadlines have been extended as well (see key dates below).
  3. Queen's has set its internal online submission deadline for February 12 at NOON. This earlier submission deadline has been set to avoid potential slow-downs in the Convergence portal and to allow URS staff time to check your submission for critical errors/issues prior to the agency deadline (see submission process below).

Review Process - University Research Services

The deadline to receive an APPLICATION REVIEW from University Research Services is February 4, 2019. Note that the review is not a scientific review (i.e. a review by a researcher in your discipline). The review is performed by a Research Projects Advisor at University Research Services. The advisor will:

  • Perform a detailed reading and content review of your application (includes editing suggestions)
  • Perform a budget review
  • Send you detailed comments / feedback

If you would like to have your application reviewed by University Research Services, please email Traci Allen ( your proposal documents no later than February 4.  Please remember that the closer your application is to complete, the more useful the review process will be. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Submission Process

  • Your application must be submitted using the agency's Convergence Portal. When you hit submit your application will be electronically directed to the University Research Services for review and approval. Then, administrators at University Research Services will forward your application on to the funding agency on your behalf. The internal submission deadline at Queen's is February 12, 2019 at NOON.

  • PIs must submit a TRAQ DSS for this funding opportunity before applications are forwarded on to the funding agency by URS. Hospital-based researchers must submit their TRAQ DSS by January 24, 2019. Researchers who are not conducting Hospital-based research must submit their TRAQ DSS by February 7, 2019. All TRAQ DSS files must include a DRAFT copy of the proposal and budget/budget justification. TRAQ DSS files for Hospital-based research must also include the Hospital Departmental Information & Impact Form (PDF, 830 KB).
