Faculty of Health Sciences and Business School applicants: please send a draft to

Applicants from all other faculties: please send the draft to

The earlier you send your draft to URS the better. If you send us an early draft we can probably do a second review later, and it's totally fine to send a partial draft, or to send us bits and pieces as you finish them. After the review deadline we will still attempt to provide some feedback, but will have significantly less time to spend on each application the closer it gets to the deadline. If you send us your draft as Word documents rather than PDF then we can also use Word's Track Changes to make small editing suggestions.
Applicants are also highly encouraged to send their draft to several peers for review of the technical aspects of their proposal.

October 15, 2019 TRAQ deadline. Instructions for submitting a TRAQ DSS for a Discovery Grant Proposal

October 29, 2019

Mandatory Submission Deadline: all applicants have to submit their application on the NSERC Portal by that date, the earlier the better. URS has to do extensive checks on all proposals, and we need enough time so that applicants can still fix any issues that our checks uncover.

      Resources for the NOI stage

      • NSERC slide deck from the webinars for NOI applicants.
      • First time applicants should read the program description to understand the purpose and scope of Discovery grants. Feel free to ask any of the URS RPAs (see contacts below) to meet with you if you would like to discuss the concept for your Discovery proposal and/or discuss how to address feedback on declined proposals for a resubmission.
      • Guidelines to determine which research areas are eligible for NSERC vs. CIHR, SSHRC:Selecting the Appropriate Federal Granting Agency. For health-related research, please also read the 2015 addendum very carefully so that you understand what part of your research would be a good fit for NSERC.
      • NSERC Instructions for the Discovery NOI form
      • NSERC video on how to fill out an NOI
      • When choosing your list of suggested reviewers, please avoid listing people who are on "your" Evaluation Group committee (they would not be able to serve as external reviewers). You can see each committee's member list here. The members with end date 2020-2022 will be on the committee this year for certain. The ones with end date 2019 may be asked to stay on for longer, or they may be replaced (most common). The new membership lists for the various committees are updated over the summer. Some committees will be updated before the NOI is due, some after the NOI deadline.
      • Don't list anybody as a suggested reviewer who has a conflict of interest e.g., nobody from Queen's, no supervisor or trainee of yours, nobody you've collaborated, published or shared funding with
